Choosing a doula to have by your side

I had the fortune of having a doula by my side during the birth of both my children. As I often mention in class, she provided the most invaluable support both emotionally and physically!

So, what exactly is a doula?

Firstly, I must explain what a doula does as it is often quite unclear.

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to women and their partners during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. They are not medical professionals, but they offer invaluable assistance and support during what can often be an unfamiliar, stressful and difficult time.

In my personal experience, at over 42 weeks pregnant when an induction was essentially being forced upon me ( for no other reason but the fact that I was past my due date), Rosie together with my homebirth midwife were by my side providing me with essential factual information and knowledge which allowed me to make an informed decision and most importantly give me power and freedom of choice. My baby Lily arrived over two weeks past her due date perfectly healthy and at home in a birthing pool. Without my wing woman fighting my corner, I am sure the circumstances could have been different and for the worse.

I experienced quite a lengthy 27 hour labour so by the latter stages, my husband was depleted of energy! Rosie arrived to take over and provide that essential physical and emotional support.

Post birth, Rosie was on hand to pop over and chat and if needed take Lily for a walk to allow me to rest. Again, invaluable support during those early weeks.

A doula can also provide birth and post birth support in hospital. She certainly does not take away from the role of the principal birth partner e.g husband but in general can provide more experience and knowledge.

Choosing to have a doula by your side during birth will not be a decision you regret!

In summary,

Doulas can help you prepare for childbirth by providing information about the birthing process, discussing birth options, and offering relaxation techniques. They can also help you create a birth plan.

During labor, a doula can provide continuous support, offering comfort measures, coaching you through contractions, and advocating for your wishes. They can also help you and your partner communicate effectively.

After the birth, a doula can offer support with breastfeeding, newborn care, and emotional well-being. They can also help you adjust to the transition to parenthood.

Why choose a doula?

Studies have shown that women who have doula support are more likely to be satisfied with their birth.

Doulas can help women manage pain naturally, often leading to less reliance on pain medication.

Research suggests that women who have doula support may experience shorter labor times.

Doulas can provide guidance and support with breastfeeding, which can lead to increased success rates.

Having a doula can help women feel more empowered and confident during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

A doula can provide invaluable support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. By offering emotional, physical, and informational support, doulas can help women have more positive and empowering birth experiences. If you're considering hiring a doula, it's worth exploring the benefits and finding a doula who is a good fit for you and your family.
