Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it can also come with its fair share of aches and discomfort. As your body changes and your baby grows, finding comfortable positions and managing pain can become a priority. Enter the birthing ball – a simple yet versatile tool that can offer incredible support and relief throughout your pregnancy and even during labour.

Personally, my birthing ball was my saviour during my long (27 hours!) labour with my second child Lily.

I spontaneously sat and bounced on my birthing ball during those early to mid stages of labour. This bouncing motion coupled with the scent of my doTerra oils, served to provide relief and distraction from my surges.

What is a Birthing Ball?

A birthing ball is essentially a large, inflatable exercise ball made from durable, anti-burst material. It's similar to a gym ball, but often designed with a slightly firmer texture for added stability.

How Can a Birthing Ball Help During Pregnancy?

There are many reasons a birthing ball can help during pregnancy which may also explain why they are often used as a prop during pregnancy yoga.

Sitting on a birthing ball encourages you to sit upright, which can help improve your posture and reduce back pain. It can strengthen your core muscles, which provide essential support for your growing belly.

Gentle bouncing and rocking motions on the birthing ball can help strengthen and relax your pelvic floor muscles. This is crucial for supporting your baby, preventing incontinence, and aiding in postpartum recovery.

The birthing ball can alleviate pressure on your spine and pelvis, reducing back pain, hip pain, and sciatica. It also provides a comfortable alternative to sitting in chairs or on soft sofas.

Sitting on the birthing ball encourages your baby to settle into an optimal position for birth. This can potentially lead to a shorter and easier labor.

As your pregnancy progresses, finding a comfortable position to relax or sleep can become challenging. The birthing ball offers a supportive and adaptable surface that can ease discomfort.

How to Use a Birthing Ball During Pregnancy:

Sit on the ball with your feet flat on the floor and your knees slightly lower than your hips. Maintain good posture and gently rock your pelvis forward and backward.

Gently bounce on the ball to engage your core muscles and pelvic floor. This can also help relieve pressure and discomfort.

Kneel in front of the ball and lean your upper body over it, resting your arms and head. This can stretch your back and provide relief from back pain. We often practice this position during my pregnancy yoga classes in Richmond London, Twickenham and St Margarets.

Incorporate simple exercises on the birthing ball, such as pelvic tilts and hip rotations, to strengthen your muscles and improve flexibility. Again, exercises we do come to during pregnancy yoga.

How a birthing ball can be used during labour:

During labour, gravity and movement are your allies. A birthing ball can facilitate both, offering a comfortable and supportive alternative to lying in bed.

The pressure of your baby descending can cause significant back and pelvic pain. Sitting on a birthing ball allows your pelvis to open up, relieving pressure on your spine and pelvic joints. The gentle rocking and bouncing motions can also help distract from the intensity of contractions.

Upright positions, encouraged by the birthing ball, help your baby descend more effectively through the birth canal. This optimal positioning can lead to a shorter and less complicated labour.

A birthing ball allows for gentle movements like hip circles, pelvic tilts, and rocking, which can help your baby move down and through the pelvis. These movements can also help manage pain and keep labour progressing.

Sitting on a birthing ball can be more comfortable than a chair or bed, especially as labour progresses. This comfort can help you relax, which is essential for the release of hormones that facilitate labour.

A birthing ball can be used in various positions throughout labour. You can sit on it, lean over it, or use it for support while kneeling. This versatility allows you to find positions that are most comfortable for you at each stage of labour.

How to Use a Birthing Ball During Labour:

Sit on the ball with your feet flat on the floor and your knees slightly lower than your hips. Gentle bouncing, rocking, and hip circles can help manage pain and encourage your baby to descend.

Kneel in front of the ball and lean your upper body over it, resting your arms and head. This position can provide relief from back pain and allow your partner to massage your back.

Use the ball for support while squatting, which can help open your pelvis and encourage your baby to move down.

Your partner can sit behind you on a chair while you lean back onto the ball, providing counter-pressure on your lower back during contractions.

Tips for Using a Birthing Ball in Labour:

Practice Beforehand and get comfortable using the birthing ball during your pregnancy. This will help you feel more confident and comfortable using it during labour.

Make sure the ball is inflated to the correct firmness. Your knees should be slightly lower than your hips when you sit on it.

Pay attention to your body's signals and adjust your position as needed. If a particular position becomes uncomfortable, try something else.

Work with your support team whether that is your partner, doula, or midwife. They can help you find comfortable positions and provide support while you use the birthing ball.

A Natural Labour Aid:

The birthing ball is a simple yet powerful tool that can significantly enhance your labour experience. It encourages movement, promotes relaxation, and helps manage pain naturally. By incorporating a birthing ball into your labour plan, you can empower yourself to work with your body and navigate the challenges of labour with greater comfort and confidence.

Important Considerations:

It is important that you chose the right size birthing ball. Select a birthing ball that allows your knees to be at a 90-degree angle when you sit on it.

Ensure the ball is properly inflated for optimal support and stability.

Always have someone spot you when you first use the birthing ball, especially in later pregnancy.

So it goes without saying that a birthing ball may prove a valuable tool for expectant mothers. It offers a range of benefits, from pain relief and improved posture to pelvic floor health and optimal fetal positioning. By incorporating a birthing ball into your daily routine, you can enhance your comfort, support your body's changes, and prepare for a smoother pregnancy and labour experience.
