The Aromatherapy of DōTERRA: A Journey of Wellness

In the realm of holistic wellness, aromatherapy has emerged as a powerful tool for promoting physical and emotional well-being. DōTERRA, a global leader in essential oils, offers a wide range of high-quality products designed to enhance your health and vitality.  Let us delve into the world of DōTERRA aromatherapy, and explore its benefits and uses.

As many of you may know, I am a huge advocate of aromatherapy and its ability to reduce stress and promote relaxation. In fact I use essential oils in all my yoga classes from pregnancy yoga to post natal yoga. My go to brand of aromatherapy is DōTERRA who offer some of the most high quality trusted oils out there. So, what exactly are essential oils and DōTERRA, in particular?

Essential oils are concentrated extracts derived from the leaves, flowers, stems, roots, or seeds of plants. They contain a complex blend of chemical compounds that give plants their unique aroma and properties. DōTERRA sources its essential oils from around the world, ensuring they are pure, potent, and free from synthetic additives or fillers.

While the exact mechanisms by which aromatherapy works are still being studied, there is growing evidence to support its benefits. Research suggests that essential oils may influence the limbic system which is the region of the brain involved in emotions, memory and behaviour. This may lead to changes in mood and stress levels. Essential oils may also interact with the endocrine system, which regulates hormones and other bodily functions. Not only this, some essential oils have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can be beneficial for skin health and overall well-being.

The scent of essential oils can have a profound impact on our emotions. For example, citrus-scented oils like lemon and grapefruit can uplift mood and reduce stress, while floral oils like rose and jasmine can promote relaxation and tranquility. Many people find that using essential oils like lavender and chamomile in diffusers or on pillows can enhance sleep quality and reduce insomnia.  Essential oils can even be used topically to nourish and balance the skin. They can help treat acne, reduce inflammation, and promote a healthy complexion.

When combined, aromatherapy and yoga can create a powerful synergy that can help you achieve a greater sense of balance and harmony. There are a few ways in which I incorporate aromatherapy into our weekly yoga practice. Firstly, I diffuse a chosen blend to fill the room with a beautiful natural and arousing scent. I also offer a specific, suitable curated blend to each lady at various moments in class to apply to their wrists/temples/neck. This provides an opportunity to pause, breath and calm the nervous system. Finally, I clean my mats and props with a blend of oils and an approriate non toxic cleaner.

When choosing essential oils for our yoga practice, I consider our goals and preferences. For example,  Lavender, chamomile, ylang-ylang, and frankincense are commonly used to promote relaxation and stress relief. Lavender, chamomile, ylang-ylang and again frankincense can be used for energy and focus. Orange, grapefruit and bergamot can be used to improve mood.

I use a variety of DōTERRA oils but my favourite include DōTERRA Serenity which is a calming blend of essential oils designed to promote relaxation and tranquility. It's a popular choice for those seeking relief from stress, anxiety, and insomnia.  Each of the oils in this Serenity blend has its own unique properties:

  • Lavender: Known for its calming and sedative effects, lavender is a staple in many relaxation blends.

  • Ylang Ylang: This floral oil is often used to promote feelings of happiness and euphoria.

  • Bergamot: Bergamot is uplifting and can help reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Cedarwood: Cedarwood is grounding and can help to alleviate feelings of restlessness.

  • Roman Chamomile: This gentle oil is known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

I also love DōTERRA Air which is a refreshing and harmonious blend of essential oils including:

  • Eucalyptus: Known for its expectorant and decongestant properties, eucalyptus is a staple in respiratory blends.

  • Peppermint: Peppermint is invigorating and can help to clear the sinuses and promote clear breathing.

  • Lemon: Lemon is uplifting and can help to boost the immune system.

  • Ravensara: Ravensara is a powerful antiviral and antimicrobial agent.

  • Pine: Pine is refreshing and can help to clear congestion.

Finally, a more recent favourite of mine to use during our yoga practice is DōTERRA Past Tense which is a gorgeous blend of essential oils designed to evoke feelings of nostalgia and comfort. It can create a sense of peace and tranquility.

You can find several essential oils in this blend including:

  • Frankincense: Known for its grounding and uplifting effects, frankincense is often used to promote a sense of peace and serenity.

  • Cedarwood: Cedarwood is grounding and can help to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety.

  • Vetiver: Vetiver is deeply grounding and can help to promote stability and balance.

  • Spruce: Spruce is refreshing and can help to clear the mind and promote focus.

  • Patchouli: Patchouli is earthy and grounding, and can help to evoke feelings of nostalgia and comfort.

So as is clear, aromatherapy and DōTERRA in particular, offers a natural and holistic approach to wellness. By incorporating essential oils into our daily life, we can experience the many benefits they provide for our physical and emotional health. Whether you're looking to reduce stress, improve sleep, or enhance your skincare routine, essential oils can be a valuable addition to our wellness toolkit.
